the conflicted characters of Eles Não Usam Black-Tie / They
Don't Wear Black-Tie, director Leon Hirszman and star Gianfrancesco
Guarnieri's adaptation of Guarnieri's own play about a working-class family
torn apart by labor struggles. During a strike, the father, a union leader,
sides with the laborers. The son, however, opts to cross picket lines
because he needs the money to support his own growing family. This harrowing
drama won the FIPRESCI prize at the 1981 Venice Film Festival.
