"Adult" Actress from silent films. Still with us are Miriam Seegar (101) and Barbara Kent (101). Dorothy Janis (98). They were all leading ladies in the silent film era.

Anita Page was the last to star in a major silent film which "Our Dancing Daughters" can be considered. Mickey Rooney is therefore the last recognizable household name associated with the nostalgic Silent Era since he started in 1926.

I feel very sorry. She was very good actress. Her performances were unique. Her appearance marked
the beginning of the 7th art.
It is pitty that she did not appear in many movies

You could say that Mickey Rooney starred in those films, even if they were D-grade filler and shorts to boot, but I'll concede the definition.

Even so, around and actively working WITHOUT SERIOUS INTERRUPTION since those days is I think a club that only Rooney belongs to. (Especially now, alas.) Maybe Rose Marie, who had a credit a couple of years ago, but I don't believe she extends QUITE as far back as the silents. Just almost.

Adam,

The intro says "But since every **adult** silent-film performer who’s ever had his or her name above the title is now dead..."

Mickey Rooney, then billed as Mickey McGuire, was a child actor. And he was hardly a star or leading player. At the end of the decade, he appeared in comedy shorts for FBO, which later became -- a part of -- RKO. He had only a couple of bit parts in feature films.

There may be other silent-film child performers like Mickey Rooney who are still around as well. (That, as stated in the text, in addition to minor -- adult -- player Barbara Kent.)

One correction. Anita Page was not "the last silent film star still alive."

I did not know about Anita Page when I named him in an article as "the last silent film star still active," but I guess it's retroactively accurate now: Mickey Rooney. Unlike Page, who was retired for decades at a time, Rooney has acted more or less continuously since his first appearance in 1926.

Doesn't make her loss any less the end of an era, but just saying.

This was a wonderful read. I had never heard of Ms. Page but was fascinated and curious when I read her obit. Thank you so much for providing a window into this beautiful woman's wondrous life.
I can picture her graciously hostessing on the breathtaking peninsula of Coronado--one of my favorite places in the world!
Oh, what a lovely escape from my day.
Thank you!

Anita Page - The Last Surviving Silent Film Star: Q&A with Author Allan Ellenberger - Part I
August 22nd, 2007 by Andre Soares :

It would have been nice to mention the fact that Miss Page was interviewed in my book SILENT STARS SPEAK released by McFarland in 2001: I was most grateful to her and Randal Malone and for the striking portrait they supplied me for the books cover-Tony Villecco
