Barbra Streisand vs. the LOS ANGELES TIMES
December 8th, 2005 by Andre Soares
Actress-singer-director-composer-etc. Barbra Streisand has canceled her subscription to the Los Angeles Times because of the newspaper’s decision to get rid of one of its precious few intelligent, articulate - and quite funny - writers, Robert Scheer. "Robert Scheer’s column," Streisand wrote in a letter to the editor, "with its often singular voice of dissent and groundbreaking expositional content, has been among the most notable features that have sustained my interest in subscribing to the LA Times for many years now."
Scheer had been a Times columnist for 12 years, and previously had been a reporter for the paper for 17 years. In recent weeks, the Los Angeles Times has been downsizing reportedly because the newspaper’s profit margin is not as high as its owners, the Tribune Company, would like them to be.
(Among others, the Tribune Company also owns the Chicago Tribune, Newsday, the Baltimore Sun, and the Orlando Sentinel.)
