I'd say that her best is "Ladies in Retirement." This is the sort of murder mystery that should be better known today. I think the fact that it was directed by Charles Vidor, who isn't a well known figure nowadays, is a factor. Maybe if John Huston had been behind the cameras this film would have the reputation it deserves. I don’t think that “Road House” is her best. I’d say that her best is “Ladies in Retirement.”

I also think that Vincent Sherman was a very competent craftsman. Some of his movies are as good if not better than those of Michael Curtiz or any other director at Warner in the 1940s. I can't remember if she was offered the part though I know that many actresses at Warner refused it. Perhaps she was one of them. It could have changed the direction of her career and of her life as well. I think that Ida Lupino would have been great as Mildred, perhaps as great as Joan Crawford was.
