Kate Winslet’s Oscar-Losing Streak

Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet in Revolutionary Road

The Gold Derby's Tom O'Neil, never one to waste any time when it comes to Oscar season (a year-long event at the GD), is already "assuming" a possible nomination for Kate Winslet for one of two upcoming films:

"Let's assume that Kate Winslet gets nominated for the Oscars again next year, a safe bet considering she usually makes the cut whenever she's in a worthy film. Even though she's only 32 years old, she's already been nominated and lost five times — that's a record tally for someone her age. Voters adore her so much that she often gets nominated even when her equally compelling costars don't: Leo DiCaprio (Titanic) and Jim Carrey (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)."

***

O'Neil's point is that if Winslet gets another nod but goes home empty-handed, she'll have matched Deborah Kerr's and (supporting player) Thelma Ritter's six-time-Oscar-loser record for actresses. (Peter O'Toole, with 8 nods and zero wins, holds the actors' losing-streak record.)

The two films for which Winslet may get a nomination are Sam Mendes' Revolutionary Road (top photo), co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and Stephen Daldry's The Reader, in which Winslet plays opposite Ralph Fiennes and Bruno Ganz.

Kate Winslet should have won an Oscar years ago. She is ****most**** overdue.
Julianne Moore and Laura Linney are two other actresses that also must win. Else, Academy voters will look very stupid.
