Julie Christie, Gordon Pinsent in Away from HerNathaniel R.’s The Film Experience already has its updated "halfway mark" list of likely (or "potential" or "maybe yes, maybe not") contenders for the 2007 Academy Awards.

I believe that Mr. R’s predictions run from January to December, and are updated as "likely" contenders that no one has seen (and that most people have never even heard of) turn out to be critical and/or box-office bombs.

Here’s a sample of Mr. R.’s current picks for the best actress category:

Cate Blanchett, The Golden Age; Julie Christie, Away from Her; Marion Cotillard, La Vie en Rose; Jodie Foster, The Brave One; and Keira Knightley, Atonement.

(I’m surprised that Angelina Jolie is not there for A Mighty Heart. Perhaps that’s because Michael Winterbottom’s drama didn’t do all that well at the U.S. box office.)

If I were to pick a best actress for 2007 — and I must admit that I’ve only seen a small sample of the films released this year — Julie Christie, who plays a woman suffering from Alzheimer’s disease in Away from Her, would be my #1 choice. (And I’m sure she will remain so until the end of the year.)

But then again, the Academy and myself hardly ever agree on anything. In other words, Christie’s chances, at least for the time being, are kind of iffy.
