Philippe Noiret
Veteran actor Philippe Noiret died of cancer earlier today.
Noiret, whose nearly sixty-year motion picture career included about 150 films, was one of the most respected and most popular performers of his generation.
A trained stage actor, Noiret began working steadily in films in the early 1950s. He finally made a name for himself after playing Catherine Demongeot’s unhappy uncle Gabriel in Louis Malle’s 1960 comedy Zazie dans le métro / Zazie on the metro.
Among his best-known film roles are the middle-aged glutton in Marco Ferreri’s 1973 bizarre comedy La Grande bouffe / Blow-Out; the exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda in Michael Radford’s worldwide hit Il Postino / The Postman; and the film projectionist in Giuseppe Tornatore’s Best Foreign Language Film Oscar winner Cinema Paradiso.
"What’s difficult is not doing something," Noiret once remarked about his métier. "It’s redoing it."
Philippe Noiret was 76.

Philippe Noiret was a wonderful actor. I’ll never forget his performance in “Cinema Paradise.”
I agree. His was a magnificent, truly unforgettable performance in a marvelous movie. I’ve seen it about 18 times. It never gets boring.
