Dorothy Janis: Recent Photos

The Pagan (1929) directed by W. S. Van Dyke, starring Ramon Novarro, Dorothy Janis, Renee Adoree, Donald Crisp

The Stevens Orchestra Project has a page with links to photographs of bandleader Wayne King’s family at a reunion in Savanna, Illinois, in 2004.

King’s widow, former actress Dorothy Janis, was Ramon Novarro’s leading lady in one of Novarro’s best and most successful films, The Pagan (1929). Janis (b. 1910) was 94 years old at the time the photos were taken.

I tried contacting her when I was working on my Novarro biography, but either she opted not to respond or she never got my letters.

By the way, The Red Lily (1924) will be shown on Turner Classic Movies on Sunday, July 9, at 9pm PDT (or Monday, July 10, at 12AM EDT). For those who missed the ending when TCM broadcast that rare Novarro film several weeks ago, this is your chance to catch it again.

I have been searching for the name of an early talkie star ( very popular) who died at the height of her career. She was blonde curly short bobbed flapper type hair style..She was pictured on the front page in a large color photo when she died. ( in the 30’s, I believe.) My mother had the clipping in the attic for years, and she never kept things like this… It is gone now… It haunts me still just who could this woman be?
    Any help is appreciated!

    Sherry,

The only blonde female star who died in the 30s that I can think of is Jean Harlow, though she didn’t have bobbed hair.

Jeanne Eagels was also blonde, though she wasn’t quite a “talkie star.” She only made a couple of talkies, and died in 1929.
