Robert Pattinson: The New Spider-Man?

Robert Pattinson in Remember Me

Robert Pattinson as Spider-Man. Why not?

For Tobey Maguire's replacement, some have suggested Michael Cera (!), Shia LaBeouf (acceptable), George Clooney (as a teenager?), Brad Pitt (see Clooney), Channing Tatum (also too old to play teen), Megan Fox (heck, why not a Spider-Woman somewhere down the line?), Taylor Lautner (who'd be fine), Chace Crawford (fine as well), and Jay Leno (now that he's out of a job). But Robert Pattinson would be more than fine as Peter Parker, he'd be ideal.

Pattinson means box office: both Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon became gigantic worldwide hits thanks in large part to his vampire Edward. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, in which he once again stars opposite Kristen Stewart, is one of the most expected releases of 2010. And so is Pattinson's own dramatic vehicle, Remember Me (above).

So, Robert Pattinson means dollar signs, he is young enough to pass for a (somewhat mature-looking) teenager, he has that mysterious allure that would be quite appropriate for a brooding hero like Spider-Man (in my opinion, that's something Tobey Maguire lacked), and he'll surely look good in a tight red-and-blue costume. He'd be the perfect choice. Now, it's up to Sony to decide. If you think Pattinson would be a good idea, make sure you let the suits at Sony know about it.

As it's been widely reported, director Sam Raimi won't be back for Spider-Man 4. Marc Webb, who directed the box-office hit (500) Days of Summer, and Nimrod Antal of Kontroll, Armored, and Predators, have been mentioned in connection with the project. Spider-Man 4, which will have a high-school setting, is scheduled to hit theaters sometime in 2012. If Pattinson gets the job, I hope the world won't end until after the premiere.

I don't think he would be a good Spiderman. Too handsome, for once, but also mostly appealing to girls. Would a guy go see him as Spiderman? Not sure…

He'd be too hot for Spiderman. I don't think he can convincingly be geeky enough. His geeky roles from the past still showed him to be really good looking. Even when he had huge glasses he still looked really pretty. Can we handle a beautiful spiderman? I know I can. Not sure about the fanboys.
