SAG Award Winners - 2004
February 5th, 2005 by Andre Soares
Few surprises at the Screen Actors Guild Awards 2004: Jamie Foxx was voted best actor for his performance as Ray Charles in Ray; in a tightly contested race; Hilary Swank was chosen best actress for her determined boxer in Million
Dollar Baby, beating out Annette Bening’s larger-than-life stage actress in Being Julia and Imelda Staunton’s sweet, little abortionist in Vera Drake; and The Aviator’s Cate Blanchett took best supporting actress honors for her hyper-mannered caricature of Katharine Hepburn.
The only surprise of the evening was the choice of Morgan Freeman as best supporting actor for his usual low-gear playing, this time around in Million Dollar Baby. Thus far, Thomas Haden Church has won most awards in that category for his portrayal of a dim-witted, sex-starved actor in Sideways.
Alexander Payne’s Sideways, a favorite with American critics, won the best ensemble award. In other words, SAG members apparently felt that Clint Eastwood was so godawful in Million Dollar Baby that, like a thespian black hole, he sucked in the starshine of Freeman’s and Swank’s wins. How else to explain the Sideways "best ensemble" win, considering that none of its three nominees won any awards?
