Re: Wikipedia - I've seen how they've botched up Ramon Novarro's bio. I've tried correcting it, but then someone else "recorrects" the text and screws up everything again. So, I just don't bother with them. (Though Wikipedia has good links to *other* sites, where information can be verified. That's its only use, as far as I'm concerned.)

Hey, Maria,

Re: Wikipedia – I've seen how they've botched up Ramon Novarro's bio. Interestingly, by this period, when Power was offered a good film, such as From Here to Eternity, he turned it down to do a play. He only did Witness for the Prosecution because they came back to him a second time offering him more money and a percent of the gross.
I loved Twelve O'Clock High and Gentlemen's Agreement, but I didn't think too much of the others. Glad you don't use Wikipedia.

Thanks, Andre, yes, and by then, Power was really centered in Europe, as I said. isPermaLink="false">http://www.altfg.com/blog/?p=5162#comment-520115

Thanks for writing, Maria, and for all the info you provided.
A clarification: I was aware that Gregory Peck wasn't exclusively tied to 20th Century Fox in the '40s (his two initial Best Actor nods, for instance, were for other studios). But from 1947 to 1953 he was chiefly working at Fox -- and he got the studio's choicest male roles during that period -- "Gentleman's Agreement," "Yellow Sky," "The Gunfighter," "Twelve O'Clock High," "David and Bathsheba," "The Snows of Kilimanjaro." That's what I meant.
And really, I had no idea of what Wikipedia says about Gregory Peck's career because I never use that site as a source.
Once again, thanks for your input.

Thanks for writing, Maria, and for all the info you provided.

A clarification: I was aware that Gregory Peck wasn't exclusively tied to 20th Century Fox in the '40s (his two initial Best Actor nods, for instance, were for other studios). isPermaLink="false">http://www.altfg.com/blog/?p=5162#comment-520114

Hi, I would like to make a few corrections if I could:
1. Gregory Peck by no stretch of the imagination was a 20th Century Fox star ONLY, despite what Wikipedia says. He worked for David O. Selznick, MGM, UA, Fox, Warners, etc. - he freelanced. Post-1947, when Peck made the majority of his films for Fox, Power was working a lot in Europe and just trying to finish up his contract. See #2 below for just one reason. Power went back to the theater in 1950 in London. I am sure that Peck was seen more as an "actor" because he came to Hollywood after establishing himself on stage - which I might mention was during WW II, when there were lots of openings in Hollywood.
2. Just an opinion, I thought Power looked amazing in Marie Antoinette, it's one of my favorite of his films, and I thought his acting was wonderful. What upset Zanuck is that MGM put Power, who was ranked so high at the box office, in what was a supporting role. That infuriated him, and that's why he would not lend him out again. He didn't not lend Power out for some years - he never lent him out. Power lost Paris in King's Row, Joe in Golden Boy, consideration as Ashely in Gone with the Wind, and for another film Shearer wanted him for in the '40s, to name a few. So if you wonder why after Zanuck withdrew Nightmare Alley from distribution and didn't publicize it, Tyrone Power gave up on Zanuck and just wanted out, there it is.
3. Power was asked by the studio to escort Janet Gaynor and he claimed to his then girlfriend, Sonja Henie, in a letter he wrote to her, that he was just taking her around at the request of the studio. He and Henie were very deeply involved and she was extremely jealous, so who knows if he was telling the truth - she was out of town. Gaynor did get to know Power's cousin Bill, so she obviously was a friend as well.
Hope this helps some.

Hi, I would like to make a few corrections if I could:

1. When I was in college I was privileged to see him on stage in John Brown's Body with Raymond Massey and Ann Baxter in San Francisco. I had binoculars fixed on Power the whole play. He was even better looking in person than on the screen. One of my favorite movies of his besides 'The Mark of Zorro' was 'A Yank in the R A F' with Betty Grable, He was at his most charming in that picture. Presently I have 11 of his movies. I collect movies and presently have over 1500 titles. So thanks for your memories.

I enjoyed this site. In contrast, most of today's Hollywood product is really not worth talking about. The great films of the past will still be around long after today's are forgotten. It was also the good writing and production values of the past that made it possible for the era's great actors to shine...and shine they did.

Many thanks for your work in these postings…revisiting Hollywood's Golden Age is always a special pleasure. Tyrone Power Jr who was in both Cocoon and Cocoon Return, did not even have a line in Cocoon. He did not star with Don Ameche, others such as Gwen Verdon, Jessica Tandy, etc did.
He did have a line in the sequel, but again did not have a starring role as "Pillsbury"

I would like to make a correction:<br

Here in Europe, mainly French part they have a tendency to despise such an actor. being a passionate of cinema specially from the 30th to the 60th I wonder how I can influence or at least bring a new look or a new way of watching and understanding these movies and extraordinary actors and actresses.
still thinking about it

I would like just to thank you for your comments.<br
