The Brave One shot its way up to the top of the North American box office this weekend with an estimated US$14 million.
Directed by Neil Jordan, the revenge drama starring Jodie Foster and Terence Howard opened at 2,755 sites Friday, luring audiences to theatres despite mixed reviews.
Last week’s champion, 3:10 to Yuma, slipped to No. 2, earning $9.15 million from ticket sales at 2,667 locations. After two weeks in release, the James Mangold-directed Western starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe lifted its total gross to $28.5 million.
New entry Mr. Woodcock, a comedy directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Billy Bob Thornton, Sean William Scott, and Susan Sarandon, failed to connect with audiences and only made it to No. 3, collecting $9.1 million.
Meanwhile, Dragon Wars, also a new entry, arrived at the No. 4 spot with a weekend gross of $5.4 million.
Last but not least, Superbad lost two spots and dropped to No. 5, bringing in $5.2 million. Directed by Greg Mottola, the teen comedy reached a cumulative gross to $111.3 million following an impressive five-week theatrical run.
This upcoming weekend, three wide releases will compete for the No. 1 spot at the box office.
In Sydney White, a modern retelling of Snow White, Amanda Bynes stars as a college freshman who plans to overthrow the school’s most popular sorority. Directed by Joe Nussbaum, Sydney White is scheduled to open in approximately 2,000 theatres.

Also opening on Friday is Resident Evil: Extinction, the third installment in the series based on the popular video game of the same title. Starring Milla Jovovich, Extinction is set to open at 2,700 sites.
Finally, the third wide release next weekend is Mark Helfrich’s Good Luck Chuck, a romantic comedy starring Dane Cook and Jessica Alba.
