GIORNI DELL’ABBANDONO Booed AND Applauded
September 7th, 2005 by Andre Soares

"I knew that each year there are sharpshooters lying in wait. Those who come here in order to shoot down a certain type of cinema, especially Italian. But they are a minority, so let them talk nonsense for what interests me is that the film please the public. And I’m convinced that it will be well received because it tackles a subject that everyone can relate to."
Thus spoke director Roberto Faenza, whose I giorni dell’abbandono / Days of Abandonment was booed at a screening for critics during this year’s Venice Film Festival. Audiences, however, responded favorably to this drama based on a bestseller by Elena Ferrante, and starring four-time David di Donatello winner Margherita Buy as a wife abandoned by her husband (Luca Zingaretti) for a much younger woman. At the end of its public screening, I giorni dell’abbandono was awarded with a five-minute ovation.
