Shirley Temple to Receive SAG’s Lifetime Achievement Award

Army Archerd reports in Daily Variety that actress Shirley Temple, 77, the star of myriad sugary films such as Now and Forever (1935) and The Little Princess (1939), will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild at the Guild’s 12th telecast on January 12, 2006.
Temple, still distressed over the August 4 death of her husband of 55 years, Charles Black, is currently working on her second book of memoirs. The first, titled Child Star (1988), covers Temple’s screen career (which ended in 1949) and her life up to 1954.
Besides having the distinction of being both the youngest Oscar winner (a special miniature statuette in 1935, when she was six) and the biggest child star ever — though one whose number of detractors matches or perhaps even surpasses her number of fans — Temple was also active in politics during several Republican administrations.
Among her political roles were U.S. delegate to the 24th U.N. General Assembly and U.S. ambassador to Ghana.
Previous recipients of SAG’s Lifetime Achievement Award include Edward G. Robinson, Barbara Stanwyck, Pearl Bailey, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, Rosalind Russell, Katharine Hepburn, and Danny Kaye.
