ICE CREAM I SCREAM at the 2006 Queens Film Festival
by Andre Soares
Yüksel Aksu’s Dondurmam gaymak / Ice Cream I Scream, Turkey’s submissions for the 2006 Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award, won two top prizes at the 4th annual Queens International Film Festival held in the New York City suburb.
Set in a small Aegean town in the 1990s, Ice Cream I Scream tells the story of a homemade ice-cream vendor striving to keep his business afloat despite competition from giant ice-cream manufacturers. The film’s cast is mostly composed of ordinary citizens of the city of Mugla.
Now, according to one of the Academy’s eligibility rules for the Best Foreign Language Film Award, a potential nominee "must be first released in the country submitting the film no earlier than October 1, 2005 and no later than September 30, 2006." If a Turkish Daily News report is correct, Ice Cream I Scream will open in 80 Turkish theaters this Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, thus being ineligible for the 2006 Oscars.
If the film is disqualified, filmmaker Yüksel Aksu should not be discouraged. Nepal’s 2005 submission, Subash Gajurel’s Basain, was disqualified because it opened in that country after the Academy’s deadline. Well, the film can currently be found in the list of potential contenders for the 2006 Academy Awards.
