BBC Four World Cinema Awards 2006
December 8th, 2006 by Andre Soares

"Jean-Luc Godard famously said that cinema was dead," says British comedian Jonathan Ross. "Well, here’s six fine films happy to flick a v-sign at the grouchy, gallic genius: a blood bath from South Korea, an eerie French thriller, another great movie from a Spanish master – and that’s just for starters."
BBC Four has announced the shortlist for the BBC Four World Cinema Award, chosen by British film critics, film school heads, and film festival directors.
The six nominated films — five of which are European productions — are:
Volver – Pedro Almodóvar (Spain)
Caché / Hidden - Michael Haneke (France / Germany / Austria / Italy)
L’Enfant / The Child - Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne (Belgium / France)
De battre mon coeur s’est arrêté / The Beat That My Heart Skipped – Jacques Audiard (France)
Moartea Domnului Lazarescu / The Death of Mr Lazarescu – Cristi Puiu (Romania)
Chin-Jeol-Han Geum-Ja-Sssi / Sympathy for Lady Vengeance – Chan-Wook Park (South Korea)
In January, London’s National Film Theatre and Edinburgh’s The Filmhouse will screen all six nominees.
The winner of the BBC Four World Cinema Award will chosen by a panel of yet-to-be-announced film professionals. Previous jury members include actors Gillian Anderson and Robert Carlyle, director Kevin Macdonald, and singer Björk.
Jonathan Ross will host the award ceremony at the National Film Theatre, on January 25, 2007. BBC Four will cover the event live.

I was glad to see The Death of Mr Lazarescu included in this shortlist. What a wonderful film!
