2006 Golden Globe Winners

Brokeback Mountain (2005) directed by Ang Lee, starring Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle WilliamsThe Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globes for Best Picture - Drama and Best Picture - Comedy or Musical have gone to, respectively, Brokeback Mountain and Walk the Line. Brokeback Mountain won three other awards: Best Director (Ang Lee), Best Screenplay (Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana), and Best Song ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old"). Walk the Line won 2 other awards, Best Actor and Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon as the dysfunctional couple Johnny Cash and June Carter. Best Actor - Drama was critics’ favorite Philip Seymour Hoffman in Capote, while Best Actress in that category was Felicity Huffman in Transamerica. Best Foreign-Language Film was Hany Abu-Assad’s Paradise Now, which follows two would-be suicide bombers. Rachel Weisz and George Clooney won supporting honors for, respectively, the anti-pharmaceutical company (and anti-greed) The Constant Gardener and the anti-corruption (and anti-greed) Syriana.

With its Golden Globe win, Brokeback Mountain is now all but unbeatable at the Oscars. Hoffman is also the odds-on favorite, though Heath Ledger could be a surprise win. The Best Actress award will go to either Witherspoon or Huffman, though there have been a few upsets in the past.

Munich, Match Point, and King Kong were a few of the films that failed to win a single Golden Globe.
