2006 Sundance Winners

Jesse Garcia in Quinceanera

God Grew Tired of Us by Christopher QuinnThe 2006 Sundance award winners have been announced.

The Grand Jury Prize: Documentary was given to Christopher Quinn's God Grew Tired of Us (right), which chronicles the experiences of three young Sudanese refugees trying to adjust to life in the U.S.

The Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic was presented to Quinceañera (above, with Jesse Garcia), written and directed by Wash Westmoreland and Richard Glatzer, who had previously collaborated on The Fluffer. Quinceañera revolves around a group of disaffected teenagers whose mostly Hispanic Los Angeles neighborhood becomes increasingly gentrified.

Juan Carlos Rulfo's In the Pit, a Mexican documentary about the daily lives of those working on the second deck of Mexico City's Periferico freeway, won the World Cinema Jury Prize: Documentary.

13 Tzameti by Gela Babluani

The World Cinema Jury Prize: Dramatic went to 13 Tzameti, written and directed by newcomer Géla Babluani. In this violent French film, the lead character — due to a case of mistaken identity — finds himself in the lower depths of human existence.

The Best Director nod went to Dito Montiel for A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, a coming-of-age drama about a boy growing up in Astoria, New York, during the 1980s, while the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award was given to Hilary Brougher for the mystery drama Stephanie Daley, about a young woman accused of killing her newborn baby.
