Bong Joon-Ho’s The Host was a phenomenal box-office hit in South Korea. The tale of a mutant river creature with a taste for fresh human flesh, The Host works as an environmentally conscious cautionary tale, as black comedy, as drama, and as a horror flick. On the down side, it is a good twenty minutes too long, dragging quite a bit in its final third. Some careful trimming could have turned this bizarre mishmash of different film genres into a thoroughly enjoyable experience, but despite its excessive length the film does offer plenty of thrills (and laughter).
