Broadcast Film Critics Association 2005 Critics’ Choice Awards
by Andre Soares
The Broadcast Film Critics Association has announced the nominees for its 2005 Critics’ Choice Awards. And there are plenty of nominees - with ten films in the lengthy best picture shortlist, and six in most other categories. (And there’s a plethora of categories, including quirky ones such as "Best Family Film," "Best Young Actor," and "Best Young Actress.")
As to be expected, Brokeback Mountain and Capote are well represented in the nominations. Brokeback Mountain leading man Jake Gyllenhaal managed to be nominated in the supporting category, and so did Rachel Weisz and Maria Bello, both of whom are at the very least semi-leads in The Constant Gardener and A History of Violence, respectively. They’ll be competing against real supporting players with considerably less screen time. But then again, no one’s said that film awards are fair.
Like the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (and their Golden Globes), the Broadcast critics don’t give out any technical awards for those wouldn’t help the ratings of their televised awards show. Instead, their focus is on the myriad ways they can nominate "best films" and "best performers" in order to attract the largest possible number of celebrities to their show.
