Canadian Walk of Fame Nominations Contest Announced

Canada’s Walk of Fame and RBC announced today a contest to nominate Canada’s Walk of Fame honourees.  Starting on March 30th, Canadians from coast-to-coast and around the world will be able to enter the contest by recommending potential nominees that they believe deserve to be recognized for their lifetime achievements in the fields of music, sport, film and television as well as the literary, visual and performing arts, and science and innovation.  Five lucky contest participants will each win an all expenses paid trip for two to Toronto for The Canada Honours Weekend celebration (September 11-13, 2009), courtesy of the RBC Visa Infinite Avion card.

Canada’s Walk of Fame is inviting Canadians to submit a nomination for the person(s) they believe deserve to be honoured by visiting (www.canadaswalkoffame.com).  Contest sponsors include Sun Media, Cineplex Entertainment, Astral Radio, and Slaight Communications.

“The number of entries we receive from Canadians each year continues to grow by leaps and bounds,” says Peter Soumalias, President and CEO of Canada’s Walk of Fame.  “In 1998, we began as an initiative to recognize Canadians by placing stars in the sidewalks of Toronto’s Entertainment District. Since then, we have evolved into one of Canada’s most prestigious awards that truly reflects the cultural footprint of our country.”

The tribute ceremony, recently renamed The Canada Honours, will take place on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at Toronto’s Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts to be broadcast nationally.  The Canada Honours are presented by VW, RBC, NBC Universal, Cineplex Entertainment, and Allstream.

“Canada’s Walk of Fame has grown into an event that reflects the country’s diverse and burgeoning talent covering the full spectrum of the arts,” said Randy Lennox, Chair of Canada’s Walk of Fame Board of Directors.”  These internationally celebrated Canadians are recognized around the world and each of them has compelling and inspirations success stories.  The Canada Honours will celebrate their accomplishments here—their home and native land.”

About Canada’s Walk of Fame

Established in 1998, Canada’s Walk of Fame aims to educate, inform, and inspire through the permanent celebration of the achievements of Canadian music, arts and entertainment luminaries.  The annual celebration culminates in a televised tribute special that honours Canada’s finest stars from the worlds of arts, entertainment, and sports.  Each inductee is immortalized, their names forever cemented into the sidewalks of Toronto’s entertainment district.  To date, 114 Canadians have been honoured including Margaret Atwood, Jim Carrey, Steve Nash and Celine Dion.  A complete list of inductees along with more information on Canada’s Walk of Fame can be found at www.canadaswalkoffame.com.
