The 2009 Dallas-Ft. Worth Film Critics Association Awards were announced on December 17. The following day, the Utah Film Critics Association published its own list of award winners and runners-up.

When it comes to predictable choices, both critics' groups selected Jason Reitman's Up in the Air as the Best Film of the year, while Up in the Air's frequent-flying star, George Clooney, was the Dallas-Ft. Worth Film Critics' Best Actor. The Utah winner in that category, however, was – unexpectedly – Viggo Mortensen, playing a concerned father in John Hillcoat's dystopian The Road.

Here's another predictable choice: for her performance in Lone Scherfig's An Education, Carey Mulligan was voted 2009's Best Actress both by the Dallas-Ft. Worth Film Critics and the Utah Film Critics. (In Utah, Maya Rudolph was a surprise runner-up for Away We Go.)

'Thirst,' Christian McKay are surprise winners in Utah

I should add that Cary Fukunaga's Sin Nombre was the Best Foreign Language Film according to the Dallas-Ft. Worth Film Critics, while – once again, unexpectedly – Park Chan-wook's Korean vampire thriller Thirst won top honors in Utah. Another Utah Film Critics surprise: Best Supporting Actor winner Christian McKay, who plays Orson Welles in Me and Orson Welles, starring Zac Efron and Claire Danes.

Curiously, Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker – a critics' favorite this awards season --failed to top any of the award categories of either the Dallas-Ft. Worth Film Critics or the Utah Film Critics. Having said that, Bigelow's Iraq War drama did end up as second choice a handful of times.

See below the full list of Dallas-Ft. Worth Film Critics Association and Utah Film Critics Association winners and runners-up.
