2008 French Film Critics’ Étoiles d’Or winners: Espace Pierre Cardin, Paris, February 18, 2008

According to French film critics, the top French film of 2007 was not the much-ballyhooed La Vie en Rose, but the (thus far) little-known internationally The Secret of the Grain. The winner of the Special Jury Prize and the International Critics’ Award at the 2007 Venice Film Festival, writer-director Abdellatif Kechiche’s The Secret of the Grain tells the story of a North African immigrant in France who, realizing that his job situation is precarious, strives to support his family by opening a floating restaurant. The two-and-a-half-hour intimate drama won Étoiles d’Or for best French film, director, and screenwriter. Additionally, Hafsia Herzi, winner of the best young performer award at the Venice festival, was chosen best female newcomer. More on The Secret of the Grain aka The Grain of Life.
