In 2002, Academy members went all gaga over &quot;The Pianist,&quot; &quot;The Hours,&quot; and &quot;Chicago.&quot; Those three films were bound to divide up the awards among themselves. That left no room for &quot;Gangs of New York.&quot;l
Had it been released in a different year, say, &#039;03 or &#039;01, things might have been different.</description>
