Jan Troell’s Everlasting Moments, a Golden Globe nominee and Sweden’s entry for the 2009 best foreign-language film Academy Award, received eight Golden Beetle nominations, including best film, director, actor, actress, and screenplay. Set in the early 1900s, Everlasting Moments follows a young working-class woman (Finnish actress Maria Heiskanen) who wins a camera in a lottery, thus gaining a new outlook in life. The screenplay was written by Niklas Rådström from a story by Troell and his wife, Agneta Ulfsäter-Troell, whose grandmother was the inspiration for the film’s lead character.
Troell has previously won five Golden Beetles: two for director (Here’s Your Life, 1966, and As White as Snow, 2001), one for cinematography (As White as Snow, shared with Mischa Gavrjusjov), one for producing the year’s best film (Il Capitano, 1991), and a career achievement award (1989).
With five nominations apiece, 2009 Golden Beetle runners-up were Tomas Alfredson’s vampire drama Let the Right One In and Ruben Ostlund’s teen drama Involuntary.

I believe that Everlasting Moments will win the Oscar this year. It has sentiment and feeling and is beautiful to look at. Some great performances too. It deserves to win. Jan Troell is a genius.
Something tells me that “Everlasting Moments” will pull an upset and will bag the best foreign language film Oscar, instead of current favorite “Waltz with Bashir.”
We shall see…
It’s one of the films still in the running for the foreing language Oscar. It may win. I dunno. Either that or Bashir.
It won’t win. Waltz with Bashir is the winner, hands down. It can’t win in the animated category because Wall-e will win. So they’ll give it the foreign film award.
