Golden Globes 2008 Debacle

WGA Strike 2007Marc Graser analyzes the Golden Globes debacle’s effects in the local economy — in Variety:

"With the Golden Globes losing its luster this year, the big question now is just how much green Hollywood will lose as a result.

"The answer: a lot.

"Cancellation of the kudocast due to the strike could cost the local economy upwards of $80 million, according to the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp. (Same org values the Academy Awards at around $130 million.)

"And there will be losses that are impossible to calculate: The film studios and networks use the event to publicize their kudos contenders."

The British Academy ceremony, to be held on February 10, should proceed as planned. "Neither BAFTA nor our broadcaster (BBC America) is in dispute with the Writers Guild of America," read an Academy statement. "Whilst we hope for the sake of the whole international industry that the dispute is resolved, we look forward to rewarding and recognizing great filmmaking talent from around the world at our ceremony."

Steven Spielberg, by the way, will receive the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Cecil B. DeMille award in 2009.

As for the Oscars…

An Associated Press/USA Today report quotes Oscar broadcast producer Gil Cates saying that the Oscar show will go on as planned on February 24 — with or without writers. "We are going to do it. I can’t elaborate on how we’re going to do it, because I don’t want anybody to deal with the elaboration in a way that might impact its success."

As mentioned in the AP article, according to the Los Angeles Economic Development Corp. the WGA strike has cost the Los Angeles area US$1.4 billion in lost wages.
