WGA Strike 2007Nikki Finke has provided thorough coverage of the Writers Guild strike both on her website, Deadline Hollywood, and in the LA Weekly. This is her latest, on the Golden Globes, at Deadline Hollywood:

"So the Hollywood writers strike can now claim its first awards show casualty. I’m hearing from my sources that NBC will not be broadcasting the big Golden Globes show as planned for January 13th. Nor will even a full frills unbroadcasted dinner party be held, either. Instead, a stripped down news telecast will be aired exclusively by NBC News from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, site of what was supposed to be the big show, where the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will announce the Golden Globe winners who won’t be present in the room."

Now, aren’t the Golden Globes the WGA strike’s second awards show casualty? The People’s Choice Award will be broadcast tomorrow, Jan. 8, but only in a stripped-down "news" format. Queen Latifah will host the "news" show featuring taped acceptance speeches (winners are notified in advance) and movie stars answering questions from fans.

Also at Deadline Hollywood, Finke reports on a WGA deal with Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner’s United Artists.

Well worth reading: RJ Smith’s September 2004 Los Angeles magazine piece on Nikki Finke. Here’s a brief excerpt:

"In her two decades covering the Industry — writing for the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles magazine, The New York Observer, Vanity Fair, the New York Post, and anybody else willing to put their head in the hornet’s nest — Finke has accumulated a reputation as a, um, difficult person and an intrepid journalist.

"She was a leading explicator of the rise of agents in the ’90s and a scourge to superagent Mike Ovitz. She exposed Miramax’s Oscar lobbying tactics and landed the first interview with madam-to-the-Industry Heidi Fleiss. In early 2002, she lost a freelance gig at the New York Post after she reported on Disney’s battle over the Winnie-the-Pooh royalties. Disney officials had complained to her bosses about her coverage, and in a subsequent lawsuit Finke charged the Post with bending to Disney’s wishes and smearing her name. (The parties are currently in settlement discussions.)"
