"Oscar’s Docs: An Evening with Sarah Kernochan" will kick off the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’s 2007 “Monday Nights with Oscar” series, with screenings of Kernochan’s two Academy Award-winning documentaries, the feature Marjoe (above) and the short Thoth, on Monday, January 8, at 7 p.m. at the Academy Theater at Lighthouse International in New York City.

Hosted by historian and journalist Perry L. van der Meer, the presentation will feature a post-screening chat with Sarah Kernochan.

Thoth spotlights Stephen Kaufman, aka Thoth, a performance artist in New York’s Central Park. The scantily dressed Thoth performs one-man operas, aka “prayformances,” with violin accompaniment, so as to try "to bring divine inspiration and healing to the world."

Marjoe Gortner in Marjoe by Sarah Kernochan and Howard SmithMarjoe, co-directed by Kernochan and Howard Smith, tells the story of Evangelical preacher Marjoe Gortner, who discusses the tricks of his trade thus demonstrating that religion and show business have a whole lot in common. Indeed, Gortner would become a Hollywood actor, appearing in a number of TV series and in features such as Earthquake (he’s the guy with posters of hunky men in his room), Mausoleum, Starcrash, and Hellhole.

The film’s tagline: You Keep the Faith…Marjoe Keeps the Money.

“Monday Nights with Oscar” is a monthly series showcasing high-quality prints of films that have been nominated for or won Academy Awards.

The Academy Theater at Lighthouse International is located at 111 East 59th Street in New York City. Tickets for the screening are $5 for the general public and $3 for Academy members and students with a valid ID. All seating is unreserved.

Tickets may be reserved by calling 1-888-778-7575. Depending on availability, tickets may be purchased the night of the screening. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
