National Society of Film Critics 2005 Awards
by Andre Soares

Capote, which follows flamboyant writer Truman Capote during the time he was working on In Cold Blood, was picked as the Best Film of 2005 by the prestigious National Society of Film Critics. Other winners include Best Director David Cronenberg for A History of Violence (which lost the Best Film award by one single vote, after six rounds of voting), Best Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman for Capote, Best Actress Reese Witherspoon for Walk the Line, and Best Foreign Film Gegen die Wand / Head On, which depicts the culture clash suffered by the children of Turkish immigrants in Germany.
Brokeback Mountain failed to win a single award, though according to James Verniere of the Boston Herald it was a strong contender in many categories. (Heath Ledger took third place in the Best Actor competition.)
As most elsewhere this year, smaller American films and non-American productions took center stage in the voting.
