New Academy Rules for Documentaries

Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004) directed by Michael MooreThe Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has changed its eligibility rules for documentaries. From now on, non-fiction films can qualify for Oscar consideration even if they have been shown on television, as long as they have had a minimum of 25 commercial theatrical exhibitions in 15 U.S. states. Previous rules had disqualified documentaries that were shown on TV within nine months of their screening in theaters.

Michael Moore’s critically acclaimed Fahrenheit 9/11, the most successful documentary ever, was disqualified for the 2004 awards because it was shown on a U.S. cable station on the eve of that country’s presidential election.
