New York Film Critics Circle 2005 Winners

 

Brokeback Mountain (2005) directed by Ang Lee, starring Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams, Randy Quaid

Brokeback Mountain has won its second major Best Picture award, this time from the New York Film Critics Circle. This tale of forbidden yearning also brought Ang Lee the Best Director award, and Heath Ledger the Best Actor award. Reese Witherspoon was chosen as Best Actress for her portrayal of June Carter in Walk the Line. Best Foreign Film was 2046 (2004) directed by Wong Kar Wai, starring Tony Leung, Ziyi Zhang, Gong Li, Maggie Cheung, Faye Wong, Carina LauWong Kar Wai’s 2046, which also received the Best Cinematography award for Christopher Doyle, Lai Yiu Fai, and Kwan Pun Leung. Two Werner Herzog documentaries won the Best Non-Fiction Film award, Grizzly Man and The White Diamond. Best Supporting Actor and Actress were William Hurt and Maria Bello, both for A History of Violence. Noah Baumbach nabbed one more Screenplay award for The Squid and the Whale, while Hayao Miyazaki’s Hauru no ugoku shiro / Howl’s Moving Castle was chosen the Best Animated Film.
