Oscar statuetteAcademy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences spokesperson Leslie Unger has stated that none of the Oscar 2009 presenters will be announced before the February 22 telecast. In other words, watch the Oscarcast or miss out on … Seth Rogen?

Unger was quoted as saying, "There will be fantastic movie stars that appeal to a whole range of movie lovers and fans of our show. We’re just not going to tell you who they all are."

Blame the suspense (and potential disappointment in case, say, Danielle Darrieux or Paul Rudd are nowhere to be found during the ten-hour-long show) on Oscar 2009 producers Laurence Mark and Bill Condon.

Personally, I’m not so sure that keeping everything secret is such a good idea, but who knows? Relatively speaking (by 2009 TV standards), the Golden Globes — which boasted that it would have more stars than there are in the heavens — did quite well for its slot this past Sunday, though it was the least watched Globe ceremony since NBC began broadcasting the show in the mid-1990s. Oscar organizers surely need all the help they can get to justify the show’s exorbitant ad fees, but will keeping the presenters nameless actually spark any extra interest?

Meanwhile, across the North Atlantic, Jonathan Ross, reportedly the BBC’s highest-paid star, has announced that he will host the 2009 BAFTA Awards next month. (The BAFTA nominees will be announced tomorrow.) Several weeks ago, Ross was suspended by the BBC as a result of a tasteless prank involving Fawlty Towers actor Andrew Sachs and his granddaughter, Satanic Sluts member Georgina Baillie.

The 2009 Academy Awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, February 22 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center. In the US, the Oscarcast will be televised live by ABC.

The 2009 BAFTA awards ceremony will be held at the Royal Opera House on Sunday, February 8. In the UK, the show will be televised live by the BBC. Considering the furor over L’Affaire Ross, the BAFTA ceremony will likely have a not inconsiderable audience for their 2009 show.

This is silly. They should say who is going to be there. Else, chances are people will be very disappointed to see the same faces over and over again.

Silly is the right word. Who are they going to bring to the Oscars that is so special?

They didn’t want anyone to know that Jack Black was going to be there.
