Palm Springs Film Festival Awards - 2007 Winners

 

Zemestan / It's Winter (2006) by Rafi Pitts, with Hashem Abdi, Mitra Hajjar

The Palm Springs International Film Festival announced its jury and audience winners this past Sunday, Jan. 14.

The New Voices New Visions Grand Jury Prize was given to Rafi Pitts’s Iranian drama Zemestan / It’s Winter, the story of a woman left behind in a small Iranian town after her husband travels abroad looking for work.

Aguas Argentinas / Agua (2006) by Veronica Chen, with Diego Alonso, Rafael Ferro, Jimena Anganuzzi

The Special Jury Prize went to Verónica Chen’s Aguas Argentinas / Agua, an Argentinean drama about two swimmers — one trying to refute charges of doping, the other doing whatever he can to join the national team.

Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s old-fashioned spy melodrama Das Leben der Anderen / The Lives of Others, winner of 7 German Academy "Lola" Awards and the European Film Academy’s best film, was the audience choice for best narrative feature. Das Leben der Anderen revolves around a Stasi spy who undergoes a change of heart after snooping into the lives of a playwright and his girlfriend.

Lucy Walker’s British documentary Blindsight, about a blind mountain climber who leads a group of blind Tibetans up Mt. Everest, received the audience award for best documentary feature.

The International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) Award for best foreign-language film of the year went to Guillermo del Toro’s dark fairy tale El Laberinto del fauno / Pan’s Labyrinth.
