PRIVATE Not Italian Enough
by Andre Soares

Adn Kronos International reports that Italy’s candidate for the 2005 Academy Awards, Private, has been deemed ineligible for the Best Foreign-Language Film Oscar because the film’s dialogue is spoken in Arabic, English, and Hebrew. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has asked Italy to submit another film. (Chances are the replacement will be the Italian film committee’s second choice, Giovanni Veronesi’s Manuale d’amore / Love Manual.)
Directed by Saverio Costanzo, and starring Mohammad Bakri and Tomer Russo, Private details the tensions between a Palestinian family and a group of Israeli soldiers. The film is slated for a U.S. release on November 11.
