Satellite Awards - 2006 Winners
by Andre Soares
I wasn’t going to bother posting the nominees for the International Press Academy’s Satellite Awards, created 11 years ago following a rift within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. But after accidentally looking at their nominations, I felt their choices were actually more interesting and eclectic than those of the more commercial Golden Globes.
Films and individuals with little p.r.-generated buzz were included in their shortlists, among them Joshua Jackson, nominated as Best Actor (Drama) for his performance in Aurora Borealis; Ryan Fleck’s Half Nelson, up for Best Film (Drama); André Téchiné’s Les Temps qui changent / Changing Times found in the Best Foreign-Language Film category; and Casa de Areia / House of Sand in the Best Screenplay category (for screenwriters Elena Soarez, Luiz Carlos Barreto, and
Andrucha Waddington).
The Satellite Award winners, which were announced yesterday in Beverly Hills, were considerably more mainstream. The crime drama The Departed was voted Best Film (Drama); Dreamgirls was the Best Film (Comedy or Musical); and Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) and Clint Eastwood (Flags of Our Fathers) shared the Best Director award.
One major problem with the Satellite Awards is that they cover too many categories (i.e., the unnecessary — and misleading — "drama" vs. "comedy / musical" division), and too many media. In addition to film, the International Press also gives awards to TV programs, DVDs, and even videogames. As a result, I’ve decided to leave out the videogame section from the 2006 Satellite Awards list posted here.
