THE PAINTED VEIL: Forgotten But Not Gone (Yet)

The Painted Veil (2006) by John Curran, with Edward Norton, Naomi Watts, Liev Schreiber, Diana Rigg

"Granted, it wouldn’t be the Academy Awards if voters didn’t insist upon ignoring some of the very best movies of the year, usually because those movies (like this year’s inevitable Oscar bridesmaid, United 93) are simply too edgy, or tackle subject matter that’s too challenging for the voters’ decidedly mainstream tastes.

"But if ever there were a movie that falls squarely inside the Oscar wheelhouse, it’s The Painted Veil — an exceedingly old-fashioned love story and tale of redemption, set against a picturesque historical background. Indeed, there’s something a little screwy when a glib, blood-soaked action picture like The Departed is expected to lead the nominations, while a movie that plays like the love child of Out of Africa and The Good Earth will be lucky to earn even a single mention."

That’s Christopher Kelly in the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram. Kelly refers to The Painted Veil as a "tender, beautifully mounted and exceptionally well-acted film."
