The WGA Strike and the Golden Globes

Writers StrikeMichael Cieply via the International Herald Tribune:

"Whether the Globes will be broadcast [on January 13] has come into doubt.

"Jorge Camara, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association [HFPA], reassured guests at its Christmas gala in Beverly Hills a week ago that the star power of the Globes, the organization’s annual awards ceremony, would not be dimmed, according to several publicity executives who attended.

"But on Thursday, Jeff Hermanson, strike coordinator for the Writers Guild of America West and the Writers Guild of America East, still promised a showdown on the sidewalks around the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where the Globes ceremony is set to be produced by Dick Clark Productions and broadcast by NBC on Jan. 13."

According to Cieply’s article a spokesperson for Steven Spielberg, who is scheduled to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award, said that the director will decide later this week if he’ll show up or not at the awards ceremony.

Among the potential losers if the Golden Globes ceremony is not aired — as that means little-to-no revenues for the non-profit HFPA — are several film education programs. Last August, the Association donated US$1.2 million to 28 recipients, including the Columbia University School of the Arts and the Sundance Institute.
