Toronto Film Critics Association Awards - 2006 Nominations

Manufactured Landscapes (2006) by Jennifer Baichwal

The Toronto Film Critics Association announced its list of nominees — three or four per category — for their "Best of 2006" picks.

Most of the nominees are the usual suspects, already found in other critics’ lists, such as The Departed, The Queen, and United 93, but the Toronto critics also made a few unexpected choices, including having Cannes Film Festival winner L’Enfant / The Child up for Best Foreign Language Film, and directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne competing in the Best Director category.

Another little-heard of title (in the U.S.) is Jennifer Baichwal’s Manufactured Landscapes, which follows photographer Edward Burtynsky as he travels the world looking for industrial "landscapes." Manufactured Landscapes received two nominations: Best Documentary and Best Canadian Film. It will be screened at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.

Ryan Gosling, who hails from Ontario, did get a Best Actor nod for his performance as a drug-addicted visionary inner-school teacher in Half Nelson.

The Toronto Film Critics Association 2006 winners will be announced on Wed., December 20.
