Writers Guild of America (WGA) Awards - 2006 Nominations

The Queen (2006) by Stephen Frears, with Helen Mirren, Michael Sheen, James Cromwell, Sylvia Syms

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has announced its ten feature-film nominees.

Among them are, in the original screenplay category, Guillermo Arriaga for Babel, Michael Arndt for Little Miss Sunshine, and Peter Morgan — who has topped most U.S. critics’ lists — for The Queen.

In the adapted screenplay category, among the nominees are William Monahan for the utterly absurd The Departed; Sacha Baron Cohen, Anthony Hines, Peter Baynham, Dan Mazer for the utterly surreal Borat (even though some of the film’s best lines and situations — supposedly — came from unrehearsed, non-actors); and, surprisingly, Aline Brosh McKenna for the utterly lame The Devil Wears Prada. (Instead of, say, the much more respected Letters from Iwo Jima, which was left out of the WGA shortlist.) Perhaps McKenna’s film adaptation is that much better than Lauren Weisberger’s roman à clef?

According to the WGA website, "films eligible for a Writers Guild Award were released in the year 2006 and produced under the jurisdiction of Writers Guild of America, East and West or affiliate guilds in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, and New Zealand. There were 252 films eligible for nomination in the categories of Original Screenplay (147) and Adapted Screenplay (105)."

That means Guillermo del Toro would most likely be ineligible for his much praised El Laberinto del fauno / Pan’s Labyrinth original screenplay, and the same goes for Pedro Almodóvar and his original screenplay for Volver.

Also left out were Patrick Marber for his adaptation of Notes on a Scandal (from Zoe Heller’s novel), Bill Condon for his adaptation of Dreamgirls (from Tom Eyen’s Broadway hit), and Alan Bennett for his adaptation of his own play The History Boys.
