Best Films - 1950

Sunset Boulevard (1950) directed by Billy Wilder, starring Gloria Swanson, William Holden, Nancy Olson, and Erich von Stroheim
One of the cinema’s masterworks, Billy Wilder’s Gothic Sunset Boulevard takes a caustic look at the trappings of fame. Gloria Swanson came out of her big-screen retirement to create one of the most tragic and most memorable performances on record. The corrosive screenplay is credited to Wilder, longtime partner Charles Brackett, and D. M. Marshman, Jr. Hollywood wouldn’t be so mercilessly dissected until David Lynch’s Mulholland Dr., more than half a century later.
