First Kashimiri-Language Film in 39 Years Comes Out in May
May 6th, 2006 by Andre Soares
"I wanted to have popular entertainment in my language. Through this film I want to redefine Kashmiri entertainment," says filmmaker Aarshid Mushtaq. His film, Akh Daleel Loolech, will be the first film in the Kashimiri language to be released - though only via the Internet, and on DVDs and VCDs - in 39 years.
All Kashmiri cinemas were shut down in 1989, and they still haven’t reopened. In the last 17 years, the region has been plagued by a separatist war that has killed almost 70,000 people.
Akh Daleel Loolech opens later this month.
