BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN Precursor

Song of the Loon (1966) written by Richard ArmoryLong before Brokeback Mountain, there was Song of the Loon. Directed by Andrew Herbert, and with a cast of unknowns (including John Iverson, Morgan Royce, Lancer Ward, Jon Evans, and Brad Fredericks), this no-budget 1970 film also revolves around a male homosexual romance set in the American West. According to an IMDb poster, Richard Armory (a nom de plume, as per the Arsenal Pulp Press) wrote the screenplay, based on his own 1966 pulp novel. Two sequels to Song of the Loon came out by 1971.) You can watch a Song of the Loon clip at Planet Out.

As per the IMDb, director Andrew Herbert worked as a sound editor in several films of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and as a film editor in the first half of the 1970s. (Among his credits, Mr. Sycamore, with Jason Robards, Sandy Dennis, and Jean Simmons). Watching the clip at Planet Out, however, Song of the Loon was clearly an amateurish effort - and that may well be its main appeal.
