Alice in Wonderland continued to lead the pack on Tuesday, March 9, grossing nearly $8 million — $7.976m to be more exact — according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. Tim Burton’s fantasy blockbuster had a small 11.5 percent drop from Monday. After five days, Alice in Wonderland has grossed a staggering $133 million in North America.
Alice in Wonderland stars Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Crispin Glover, Matt Lucas, and the voices of Stephen Fry, Barbara Windsor, and Michael Sheen.
At a very distant #2, Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo, took in $1.1 million (+8.9%), while Antoine Fuqua’s cop drama Brooklyn’s Finest was down one spot, with revenues of $1.03 million (-3.7%). The cop drama stars Richard Gere, Don Cheadle, Ethan Hawke, and Wesley Snipes.
James Cameron’s Avatar was #4 with $781K (-4.4%), while Kevin Smith’s comedy Cop Out, starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, was #5 with $751 (+11.9%). Breck Eisner’s horror flick The Crazies, with Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell, was next with $603K (+1.9%).
At #7, Jeff Bridges‘ Crazy Heart earned $428K (+13.4%). The Oscars for Best Actor and for Best Song (T Bone Burnett and Ryan Bingham’s "The Weary Kind") are still giving a boost to this drama about a troubled, aging country singer. To date, Crazy Heart has grossed $30.3 million, chiefly thanks to awards season ballyhoo.
Garry Marshall’s all-star Valentine’s Day was next with $303K (+19.6%) at #8. The romantic comedy stars Bradley Cooper, Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway, Taylor Lautner, Eric Dane, Carter Jenkins, Taylor Swift, and many others. At #9, Chris Columbus‘ adventure flick Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, starring Logan Lerman, grossed $288K (+7.1%).
Rounding out the top twelve were the Channing Tatum-Amanda Seyfried romantic melodrama Dear John ($241K, +21.3%), Sandra Bullock’s The Blind Side ($170K, +4.8%), and Benicio del Toro’s The Wolfman ($155K, -0.1%). A week ago, The Blind Side earned $122K; Bullock's Oscar win has clearly given the sentimental drama a good box-office push.
The Robert Pattinson-Kristen Stewart-Taylor Lautner supernatural drama The Twilight Saga: New Moon added another $15K on day 110. Even though the film got next to no buzz during awards season, it continues to lure fans. New Moon will still be playing when Pattinson’s first major non-vampire vehicle, the romantic drama Remember Me, opens on Friday.
