Avatar’s IMAX screenings have grossed about $68m in North America and $33m overseas, becoming the first IMAX presentation to cross the $100m mark, according to Screen Daily. The previous record-holder in the large screen format was Robert Zemeckis‘ motion-capture The Polar Express, with Tom Hanks, which took in $71m.
Among upcoming IMAX movies are Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2, starring Robert Downey Jr and Scarlett Johansson; Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, with Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Christopher Lee, and numerous others; and Toni Myers‘ IMAX Hubble 3D.
After 27 days out, James Cameron’s sci-fi spectacle has earned a remarkable $445.7 million at the domestic box office. Avatar is now #4 on Box Office Mojo’s all-time domestic box-office chart (not adjusted for inflation or higher 3D/IMAX ticket prices), having just passed Shrek 2. It’ll be #3 by Monday, ahead of George Lucas‘ Stars Wars ($460m).
Written and directed by Cameron, Avatar stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Laz Alonso, Giovanni Ribisi, CCH Pounder, and West Studi. The film has garnered nominations from the American Cinema Editors, the American Society of Cinematographers, the Writers Guild, the Art Directors Guild, the Directors Guild and the Producers Guild. It’s also up for a Best Film (drama) Golden Globe, and it’ll likely be a top contender for Oscars, too.
