Avatar is now South Korea's biggest blockbuster ever, having surpassed the number of tickets sold by Bong Joon-ho's 2006 monster movie The Host, according to Yonhap News. 20th Century Fox Korea has announced that James Cameron's 3D sci-fier starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver, has sold more than 13.01 million admissions up to Saturday afternoon. The movie opened in Korea in December.
To date, Avatar has grossed $87.3 million in that country, where surcharges for 3D screenings are about 40 percent higher than for regular movies, according to The Korea Herald. Avatar's top international market is France, with a total of $169 million to date. Last weekend, the film was #14 in that country in terms of ticket sales.
Also this weekend, Avatar crossed the $700 million mark at the domestic box office. That's a first, though Avatar still trails a number of other movies in terms of ticket sales. The film's total gross in the U.S. and Canada currently stands at $706.9 million.
Next weekend, Avatar will likely suffer a significant box office drop in North America and in many other top film markets, as Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland will be replacing it at numerous IMAX and 3D theaters. But Fox is reportedly planning to rerelease the science-fiction adventure later this year.
