Avatar recovered the top spot at the domestic box office on Monday, Feb. 8, according to figures provided by Box Office Mojo. On its 53rd day, James Cameron’s 3D sci-fi adventure earned $2.25 million (a 16.7 drop from the previous Monday), edging out weekend victor Dear John, which had earnings of $2.14 million. Directed by Lasse Hallström, the romantic tearjerker starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried has grossed $32.6 million after 4 days in release.

The John Travolta-Jonathan Rhys Meyers vehicle From Paris with Love earned only $823K ($303 per screen), followed by Mel Gibson’s Edge of Darkness with $662K, a 37.8 percent drop from the previous Monday. The $80 million revenge thriller has earned a mere $29.6m after eleven days.

At #5, Denzel Washington’s post-apocalyptic drama The Book of Eli earned 521K, while Dwayne Johnson’s Tooth Fairy was #6 with $410K. The Kristen Bell-Josh Duhamel romantic comedy When in Rome was down to seventh place with $390K, barely edging out Legion with $383K. Jeff BridgesCrazy Heart grossed $342K, for a total of $11.4 million to date.

Rounding out the top twelve were Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock Holmes ($237K), Sandra Bullock’s The Blind Side ($211K), and George Clooney’s Up in the Air ($189K).
