FOUR CHRISTMASES Tops Box Office

Reese Witherspoon, Vince Vaughn in Four Christmases

Seth Gordon’s holiday comedy Four Christmases topped the North American box office this Thanksgiving weekend with US$31.6 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Starring Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon as a couple paying a visit to all four of their divorced parents on Christmas Day, the film lifted its domestic total to $46.7 million after only five days in release.

Bolt

Jumping to No. 2 this weekend was Walt Disney’s Bolt, which collected another $26.5 million and brought its cumulative gross to $66.8 million. Featuring the voices of John Travolta and Miley Cyrus, the animated adventure follows a dog who believes he has superpowers until he realizes he’s merely the star of a popular TV show.

Robert Pattinson in Twilight

At No. 3, Catherine Hardwicke’s vampire romance Twilight took home $26.3 million, reaching an impressive total haul of $119.6 million after a two-week run. With Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in the lead roles, the movie focuses on a teenage girl falling in love with a friendly vampire.

Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko in Quantum of Solace

Dropping to fourth place was Marc Forster’s 007 adventure Quantum of Solace, which pulled in $19.5 million. The cumulative gross of the 22nd official James Bond film now stands at $142 million after only three weeks in release.

Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman in Australia

Debuting at a lowly No. 5 was Baz Luhrmann’s epic adventure Australia, which earned $14.8 million from 2,642 locations. In the film, Nicole Kidman plays an English aristocrat who falls in love with a stockman (Hugh Jackman) during her stay in Australia.

Following closely at No. 6 with $14.5 million was Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, which brought its total gross to $159.5 million. New entry Transporter 3 only made it to seventh place with $12.3 million. Its domestic total currently stands at $18.5 million.

Near the bottom of the top ten, David Wain’s surprise hit Role Models collected $5.2 million at No. 8 for a total of $57.8 million, while The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, which has just earned Vera Farmiga the best actress award at the British Independent Film Awards, reached a cumulative gross of $5.1 million in ninth place.

Sean Penn in Milk

Rounding out the top 10 was Gus Van Sant’s latest drama Milk, which opened at only 36 locations but managed to pull in $1.3 million. In the film, Sean Penn stars a Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected into public office in the United States.
