New Moon movie box office record
New Moon, the second movie in the Twilight Saga series, earned $72.7 million on its first day out at the North American box office. That figure includes a record $26.3 million from midnight screenings. Directed by Chris Weitz, The Twilight Saga: New Moon stars Kristen Stewart as the human Bella Swan, Robert Pattinson as the vampire Edward Cullen, and Taylor Lautner as the about-to-become-ex-human / soon-to-become-werewolf aka shapeshifter Jacob Black. As a result of its unexpected box office success, the New Moon movie adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling novel has broken the single-day box office record in North America, which had been previously held by Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. Starring Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Aaron Eckhart, the Batman Begins sequel took in $67.16 million on opening day last year.
According to reports, if The Twilight Saga: New Moon gains momentum, it’ll break another The Dark Knight record: best opening weekend ever in the United States and Canada. (Some analysts find that unlikely.) Last year, The Dark Knight earned $158.4 million on its first weekend out. [See also "The Twilight Saga: New Moon Box-Office Records."]
New Moon movie: Romantic triangle
In New Moon, Kristen Stewart’s Bella is abandoned by Robert Pattinson’s Edward, her vampire lover who (absurdly) believes that by leaving Bella in Forks he’ll keep her protected from assorted "supernatural" threats. If only.
Taylor Lautner is the Quileute Indian who throughout the course of New Moon goes from sweet-natured teen to cocky and arrogant buffed-up dude after his shape begins shifting. No, not that. What I mean is that Jacob becomes a part-time werewolf. Romantic entanglements and conflicting loyalties ensue.
Catherine Hardwicke directed the original Twilight, starring Stewart and Pattinson (and with a long-haired Lautner in a small supporting role). The 2008 sleeper blockbuster went on to earn $350m worldwide.
"The moon may be new and the director may be different," writes Michael Rechtshaffen in The Hollywood Reporter, "… but otherwise, the second installment of the Twilight saga remains, for better or worse, exceptionally faithful to its 2008 beginnings … rather than venture out in potentially more intriguing or substantial directions, which should suit its ferocious adolescent female fan base just fine."
New Moon movie cast
Besides Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, the Twilight Saga: New Moon movie cast includes the following: Anna Kendrick, Michael Sheen, Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Kellan Lutz, Ashley Greene, Jackson Rathbone, and Rachelle Lefevre.
Plus: Billy Burke, Michael Welch, Graham Greene, Christian Serratos, Gil Birmingham, Daniel Cudmore, Jamie Campbell Bower, Christopher Heyerdahl, Cameron Bright, Charlie Bewley, and Dakota Fanning.
Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg adapted Stephenie Meyer’s second book in the series.
