Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Taylor Lautner Settle for 2nd Place

With $20 million, Sandra Bullock‘s The Blind Side did indeed lead the pack at the domestic box office last weekend, earning nearly $5 million — or about 30% — more than The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Robert Pattinson‘s vampire, Kristen Stewart‘s teen, and Taylor Lautner‘s werewolf had to settle for the second spot after three weeks at the top.
Among other box-office news were the results for five new movies:
- Brothers, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, and Natalie Portman in a love triangle that is an indirect result of the war in Afghanistan (Now, get real. Don’t expect any Hollywood portrayals — romantic or otherwise — of the effects of that war on the Afghans themselves.)
- Armored, a crime actioner starring Matt Dillon, Jean Reno, and Laurence Fishburne.
- Everybody’s Fine, a remake of Giuseppe Tornatore‘s 1990 melodrama with Robert De Niro in the old Marcello Mastroianni role of the widower who travels cross-country to meet with his children. Drew Barrymore, Melissa Leo, and Kate Beckinsale co-star.
- Transylmania, in which a group of college students drink, party, and get murdered with equal ease.
- Jason Reitman‘s Up in the Air, in which George Clooney plays a frequent-flying professional downsizer who falls in love with fellow frequent-flyer Vera Farmiga right when he’s about to get grounded. Anna Kendrick co-star. Both Clooney and the film have already been voted the top choices of the National Board of Review and the Washington D.C. Film Critics.
With $9.5 million, Brothers did reasonably well, but both Armored and Everybody’s Fine were disappointments, the former with $6.5 million and the latter with a mere $3.8 million (or $1,806 per screen average — less than half of the New Moon figure).
At #21, Transylmania was a minor disaster, with only $263,000 total or $262 per screen.
The one real success story was Up in the Air, with more than $78,000 per screen (total of 15 screens).

There is simply 1 (One) reason why New Moon is 2nd – Not that Blind Side is not an excellent movie – but in NO WAY would NM be 2nd now except for… regardless of the love triangle Summit & Melissa Rosenberg STILL DON’T GET IT- why we love the T Saga, why we waited with bated breath….and what they didn’t provide….
