Box Office: SHUTTER ISLAND (Barely) on Top on Monday




Mark Ruffalo, Leonardo DiCaprio in Shutter Island

Shutter Island, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo (above), remained the #1 movie at the North American box office on Monday, March 1, according to Box Office Mojo. However, the gap between Martin Scorsese’s psychological thriller and the runners-up wasn't as wide as was the case over the weekend.

Shutter Island grossed an estimated $1.774 million on Monday, followed by Kevin Smith’s Cop Out, starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, with $1.288 million; Breck Eisner’s horror flick The Crazies, featuring Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell, with $1.2589; and James Cameron's sci-fi adventure Avatar, starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver, with $1.2584 million. Avatar crossed the $700 million mark at the domestic box office on Saturday.

At #5, Garry Marshall’s all-star Valentine’s Day took in $509K. The romantic comedy stars Bradley Cooper, Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher, Jessica Alba, Anne Hathaway, Taylor Lautner, Eric Dane, Carter Jenkins, Taylor Swift, and many others. Chris Columbus' adventure flick Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, starring Logan Lerman, was #6 with $497K.

The #7 movie was Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman, starring Benicio del Toro and Anthony Hopkins, with $379K, followed by the Channing Tatum-Amanda Seyfried romantic melodrama Dear John with $304K.

Rounding out the top twelve were Jeff BridgesCrazy Heart ($210K), Dwayne Johnson’s Tooth Fairy ($189K), Denzel Washington’s The Book of Eli ($94K), and the John Travolta-Jonathan Rhys Meyers action flick From Paris with Love ($88K).
